This is how your sense of hearing works.
When you start using new hearing aids, expect an adjustment period filled with new sounds, potential discomfort, and a gradual improvement in your hearing experience. We will help you along the way with advice, instructions and tips for ease of use. You will have several follow-up appointments so we can get the programming perfect and make any adjustments needed. We just want to make sure you're happy and hearing better!
Consultation: Your journey begins with a Hearing Assessment where our audiologist will determine your hearing needs and select the appropriate hearing aids for you. They may create a mold of your ear for a better fit.
Programming: During the fitting, your audiologist will program the hearing aids to match your specific hearing loss profile, ensuring optimal sound clarity.
Overwhelming Sounds: On the first day, you may experience a flood of sounds that you haven't heard in a long time, which can be both exciting and overwhelming. Everyday noises may seem unusually loud, and your own voice might sound different, often described as "boomy".
Adjustment Period: It’s normal to feel discomfort or irritation as you get used to wearing the devices. Many users are advised to start wearing their hearing aids for a few hours in quiet environments and gradually increase the duration and complexity of listening situations.
Gradual Improvement: The first month is crucial for adjustment. You may notice that your brain is relearning how to process sounds, which can take time. Expect to hear new sounds and experience some feedback as you adjust the settings.
Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-up appointments are important for fine-tuning the settings and addressing any concerns. We can help you adjust to the devices and ensure they are functioning properly.
Be Patient: Understand that adjusting to hearing aids is a process. Give yourself time to adapt and don’t hesitate to reach out to your audiologist for support.
Daily Wear: Try to wear your hearing aids daily to help your brain adjust to the new sounds. Start with shorter periods and gradually increase as you become more comfortable.
Care and Maintenance: Learn how to properly care for your hearing aids, including cleaning and battery replacement, to ensure they function effectively. 1
